A protected temple with over 500 years of history was ablaze on Saturday, arousing concerns about the effective protection of cultural relics.
The fire started at 4 am on Saturday in Nianhua Temple and was put out after six hours. The temple is on the city-level cultural relic protection list.
The roof of the temple was almost completely destroyed, with unspecified costs of damage. No casualties were reported.
The fire was started accidentally by a wedding service company's warehouse located inside the temple, the Beijing Times reported, although the exact cause is being investigated.
Six fire brigade vehicles then had their access to the area hampered by narrow hutong streets crowded by parked cars. They were forced to use a 500-m-long pipe to put out the fire, witnesses told METRO.
"The sky was totally red and I could hear people yelling," a local resident surnamed Tian, who has been living near the temple for 20 years, said yesterday.
"It would be a big shame if we lost the temple because there were not enough regulations to care for it," he said.
