Wang is the main suspect in the investigation of Qvod Technology Co Ltd, which was found to have spread lewd and pornographic content in May, said the statement from the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications (NOAPIP).

After fleeing the country for about 110 days, Wang was detained on Aug 7 when trying to enter an unnamed country and returned to China on Aug 8, according to the statement.

After interrogation, Wang confessed to knowingly ignoring pornographic videos stored on his company's servers for the sake of profit, the statement said.

The company, founded in 2007 and based in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, used to offer pirated and pornographic videos through peer-to-peer video streaming technology. Its user base quickly grew to 300 million.

In April, Beijing police opened an investigation into the company for proliferating pornographic videos online.

Several other suspects were detained and Wang was placed under an Interpol red notice after he fled.

The case is still under investigation, the statement added.

QVOD was also accused of copyright infringement. In June, it was fined 260 million yuan ($41.8 million) and its value-added telecom service license was revoked.
