Amissah-Arthur sworn in as Ghanaian VP

Xinhua | Updated: 2012-08-07 09:05

ACCRA - Ghana's former central bank governor Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur late on Monday was sworn in as the country's vice president.

Ghanaian Chief Justice Theodora Wood presided over the swearing- in ceremony.

Amissah-Arthur earlier in the day passed a qualification examination by the Appointment Committee of the Ghanaian legislature, which unanimously approved his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama.

The leadership change came after the shocking, sudden death of Ghana's former president John Evans Atta Mills on July 24 at a military hospital in Accra. Mahama, the former vice president, took over as the new head of state on the same day.

Amissah-Arthur was born in Cape Coast of the Central Region on April 29, 1951. He was appointed central bank governor by Mills on October 1, 2009.
