TOKYO: The Japanese parliament on Monday endorsed a law, clearing the way for organ transplants in Japan for people under 15 and recognizing brain-dead people as legally dead.

The enactment came when the upper house plenary session passed a bill to revise the 1997 Organ Transplant Law and allow organ donations with family consent regardless of age. The 1997 law forbids organ donations from brain-dead children under 15.

The lower house, dominated by the ruling bloc, already passed the law on June 18.
