French Open director says one injured by falling panel during match

PARIS - Tournament director Gilbert Ysern of the French Open told a press conference late on Tuesday that one person was injured by the metal panel falling off a giant TV screen above Court Philippe Chatrier during a match.

A news bulletin issued earlier in the evening had previously said that three spectators were hurt, but Ysern said two of the three taken to get checked at an infirmary were fine. The third had a wrist injury and was taken to a hospital.

The panel that fell off the Roland Garros' central court is three meters long and made of metal, according to Ysern, who promised that an investigation is being opened to avoid further harm.

The incident occurred during a men's singles quarterfinal match between Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and the fifth seed Kei Nishikori of Japan while the latter trailing 6-1, 5-2.

The area was secured and the spectators were temporarily evacuated while first-aid workers coming up to help, and play had been delayed almost half-hour before it resumed and Tsonga won it in full sets.
