Cash donated to Sichuan county

Up to 200,000 yuan ($29,700) was given to Zamtang county of Aba Tibetan and Qiang autonomous prefecture in southwestern Sichuan province. It was donated by Sichuan East Accumulation Construction Engineering Co Ltd, China's building materials producer. The event is part of the effort to encourage more companies to play a part in improving education in poor mountainous areas of China. About 10 calligraphers and painters donated their artistic works to the organizers for auction. The money will be used to help alleviate poverty.

QR codes to help dementia suffers

A total of 1.5 million positioning QR codes were donated to China Population Welfare Foundation to help prevent old people with senile dementia from being lost. Zhu Zonghan, founder of Shanghai Iword Network Technology Co Ltd, manufacturer of the code, said if an old man was lost, the passersby can scan the code printed on his clothes, which was linked to his personal information, and send the location to their family members through its application or short messages. The company also donated 100,000 yuan ($14,900) to support the project.

Mickey Mouse keeps kids safe

Disney animation star Mickey Mouse played with pupils at a summer camp held in Beichuan county of southwestern Sichuan province, as sponsored by One Foundation and Walt Disney Company. During the one-week event in late July, kids learned to play the ukulele, use fire extinguishers and escape from potential dangers, including earthquakes and wild animals. The volunteers, in dress of Mickey, sang, danced and took photos with kids at Xiangquan primary school of the county where One Foundation donated a playground and music classroom last year.

Online platform promotes health

An online platform targeting pregnant women and new moms was established in early August. It will provide knowledge about breastfeeding with experts from Chinese Nutrition Society as consultants. Leyla Boumghar Bourtchai, researcher from French food producer Danone Group, one of the organizers, said they believed breastfeeding can benefit the health of moms and infants as well as enhance parent-child relationships.

Air Force flies in to aid teachers

One hundred teachers from poor regions of China attended a free training program in late July held by Chinese Air Force and China Children and Teenagers' Fund. They took classes about teaching design, evaluation and positive psychology in seven days. Those teachers came from 13 ethnic groups in 13 provinces. Since 2012, the program has helped 466 teachers. Zhu Xisheng, secretary-general of the fund, said the event aimed to help alleviate poverty by giving equal education to kids in poor areas.
