China brings culture exhibition to Nepal's capital

(China Daily) Updated: 2017-06-27 07:59

KATHMANDU - A weeklong exhibition on China's intangible culture is running in Kathmandu, offering Nepalese insight into China's rich and abundant history and culture.

The event hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Culture is designed to deepen cultural exchanges and promote cooperation between the two countries.

Co-organized by the Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and Television of Tianjin and the China Culture Center in Nepal, the exhibition has brought over about 10 artists from China's eastern port city of Tianjin.

"Preservation of cultural heritage is very important, and Nepal and China can work together in this field. Through this exhibition, Nepali people will be able to understand more about Chinese culture and heritage," Chinese ambassador Yu Hong said after inaugurating the exhibition on June 22.

The event includes a Tianjin intangible cultural heritage exhibition, a Tianjin cultural and innovative products show and Weifang kite-making and kite-flying activities. There are also displays of wood engraving, painted clay figures, dough-molding, straw collage, paper-cutting and embroidery.

The authorities say the Chinese way of promoting and protecting heritage can be a practical lesson for Nepal.

The newly appointed mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Bidhya Sundar Shakya, says: "Nepal is rich in culture, language and festivals, which should be preserved for future generations. The Chinese experience on preservation and development of cultural heritage can be very useful for us."

Applauding Chinese support in reconstruction of the quake-damaged cultural heritage of the country, he says that such events promote cultural exchanges and enhance friendship between the two countries.

A representative from the Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and Television of Tianjin says that cultural cooperation between the two neighbors could be boosted under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.

People from various walks of life, including students, visited the exhibition.
