Ghana begins extradition process for British drug suspect

Updated : 2016-03-15

Ghana on Monday started the extradition process for David McDermott, the British national arrested Friday on suspicion of drug-related offences.

The suspect, who is also married to step-daughter of Henry Wampah, Governor of Ghana's central bank, was arraigned at an Accra circuit court for the process to begin.

According to the National Crime Agency of Britain, McDermott, 42, who was not represented in court, is suspected to be a member of an organized crime syndicate from Liverpool, and has been on the run for three years after being part of a plot to import 71 million British Pounds worth of cocaine into Britain.

Prosecutors told the court that investigations were ongoing as they awaited further details from their British counterparts to facilitate their investigations.

The fugitive did not have any legal representation in court for the first hearing.
