13 jailed in Denmark's largest human trafficking case

Updated : 2016-03-15

Thirteen people were jailed Monday in the ongoing trials related to what has been characterized as Denmark's largest case of human trafficking.

The court in Lyngby district, north of capital city of Copenhagen, sentenced the 13 to prison terms ranging from three years to nearly eight years in the so-called Hvepsebo-case where 26 people are accused of having lured some 300 Romanians to Denmark and used their identities to commit financial crimes worth up to 40 million Danish kroner.

Among those sentenced was a 47-year-old Romanian who is the leader of the criminal network. He was given the severest punishment of seven years and 11 months in prison.

Monday's trial was the first of the five trials connected to the case.

Last year, police raided 62 addresses on the Danish islands of Zealand and Lolland-Falster and made 95 arrests - the largest human trafficking bust in Danish history. (1 U.S. dollar = 6.84 Danish kroner)
