Wang Weimin, professor of Shanxi University’s Language Sciences Institute, published a research paper about Chinese dialects and phonology in a prestigious Journal of Chinese linguistics, during June 2016.

Wang’s paper, titled On the Relationship between Acute-grave Divergence of Han Rhyme in Northern Song Dynasty and Separation of Hanshan and Huanhuan Rhymes of Northern Dialects in Yuan Dynasty, presented theories and facts about northern dialects to prove the history of modern Chinese phonetics. The issue has now been debated for over a hundred years.

It is a landmark achievement by Prof Wang following his previous key project for the national social science fund, for the school’s Chinese subjects to get included in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) journals.

In recent years, Prof Wang has been devoted to the cross-over study of dialect and phonology, in particular, the comparative study of the histories of Jin Chinese dialect and Mandarin Chinese phonetics. And two of his projects have received grants from the China Postdoctoral Science Fund and one was listed as a national social science fund.

It was founded in 1973 by the renowned linguist William SY. Wang (Chinese University of Hong Kong). The journal was included in the Project-MUSE database and divided into six different indexes covering SSCI and A&HCI. Project MUSE is a non-profit collaborative publishing project initiated by Johns Hopkins University Press and its Milton S. Eisenhower Library in 1995. Language, the world’s most famous linguistics periodical, is also incorporated into the Project MUSE database. [Photo/sxu.edu.cn]
