Television programs and documentaries on Datong are frequently broadcast on channels nationwide due to the city's ancient building renovation projects in recent years.

The crew of the "Walk Into Cities" program of the Eastern Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) in Taiwan set foot in Hengshan Mountain, one of the five famous mountains in China, to shoot a special documentary about the mountain from July 24 to July 26.

Another reality show named "Delicious Shanxi" started shooting at Hunyuan county on July 25, turning its camera on a traditional local delicacy, Hunyuan bean jelly. Before that, a film titled "Movie Loves Yanggao" was broadcast on CCTV-6, depicting the landscape and culture of Yanggao county.

Other similar documentaries and TV programs have aired across the country as well. In particular, a program "Happy Journey in China—Datong Station" was quite popular, drawing in large audiences by showing Datong's city walls, the temple fair, the Yungang Grottoes, Hengshan Mountain and local handicrafts.

Meanwhile, a series of festival activities also captured the attention of television audiences around the nation. The Shanxi Film Studio, for example, made a film titled "Gold Flower Woman" in Datong county in August 2012 and another film, "Moonlights of Hengshan Mountain", in Hengyuan county in June 2011.

Recently, a TV series titled "Flame of War in Pingxingguan Gate" began shooting in Lingqiu county, Shanxi province. It is listed as a key cultural project and major artistic work in 2012 by the provincial publicity department. Earlier in 2009, a movie titled "My Girlhood" was shot in Guangling county and screened nationwide, attracting movie fans with Datong's beautiful scenery.
