When a professor at Jiangnan University in the city of Wuxi, Jiangsu province, published the results of seven years of research that showed that clear spirits have trace elements that are beneficial to human health, it caused a lot of talk in the world of wine.

Xu Yan was able to clear up some misunderstandings about spirits and concerns that alcohol is bad for health so that some people avoid it even at birthday, wedding, or new year's celebrations, although toasting has a long tradition in China.

In his summary, Xu explained that a drop of neutral spirits can have more than 1,000 trace elements and that drinking it in moderation is beneficial for health, with 25 grams of alcohol for men and 15 for women suggested.

Alcohol is traditionally pasteurized, aged and filtered before bottling and the related culture has spread across China, but is especially prominent in northern cities, where people drink to show respect to their elders.
