Children’s taekwondo championship begins

A total of 75 players, took part in a children's taekwondo championship from Nov 5-6, according to Baotou Daily.

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, developed during the 1950s. It incorporates karate with traditional Korean martial arts like taekkyeon, subak, and gwonbeop.

The sport was introduced to China in 1992 and has been gaining in popularity ever since. It is most popular among teenagers as the sport features high jumping, fast spinning and kicking, while also enhancing physical fitness.

Chen Xiaojun, an official at the sports bureau of Baotou, said the championship is aimed at further popularizing taekwondo and attracting more children to participate.

Baotou, the largest industrial city of North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, has spared no efforts in improving its sports industry, and has hosted more than 20 children's championships in fields including tennis, basketball and track and field. Baotou hopes to continue to be at the forefront of Chinese sports in the future.
