Tea making and folk songs make cultural heritage list

Updated: 2016-05-13

Two cultural items from Changsha county, the green tea making technique in Jinjing and the Changsha county folk song, recently made the Hunan Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative Projects list.

The Taogong Temple Fair was selected to the list earlier.

Jinjing people in Changsha county have been engaged in tea production for generations. Tea making blends naturally into their daily lives, forming a unique local culture. Hand-made green tea, with its fragrant flavor and taste, is popular in the area.

Nowadays mechanized production of tea predominates in Changsha county, as hand-made tea has higher cost and lower yield. As a result, fewer and fewer young people are familiar with the skills of making green tea by hand. Traditional handicraft tea-making lacks worthy successors.

The Changsha county folk song arose from locals' daily customs and labor and production activities, reflecting people's thoughts, feelings and idealistic hopes from different perspectives. Although their lyrics are usually limited to five seven-word sentences, the songs feature a variety of singing styles.

Changsha seeks to revive porcelain production

In recent years, the local government has sought to revive the region's long tradition in porcelain making and boost local industry with the cultural influence of ancient Tongguan kilns, which have a history of 1,200 years.
