US regional innovation system and its implications for China

2014-07-17

By Yang Chao and Long Haibo

Report No 97, 2014 (Total 4596)

Summary:

In dealing with declining advantages in its traditional R&D and a decline in manufacturing, the US government has spent $1 billion on a manufacturing innovation network to connect basic research with industrial production and improve innovation and competitiveness. This network consists of innovation research institutes, with the government connecting various parties and arranging things based on industrial needs, financing, and small-to-mid-sized enterprise participation. The institutes do research on innovative techniques, technology, and materials and provide services and training. This manufacturing innovation network is better directed than the traditional regional innovation system, and the government plays a more direct, active role in it.

When we examine the conditions in China, we see that the Chinese government needs to play a more active and effective role in maintaining its advantages and needs to create a good innovation environment.
