Northeast China's Jilin province reported grain output of 38.03 billion kilograms in 2020 -- after handling the adverse effects of the COVID-19 epidemic, a summer drought and three successive typhoons, according to local media reports on Jan 12.

The total grain output of the province in 2020 ranked fifth in the country. The crop's yield of 446.2 kg per mu ranked it fourth in the country and Jilin maintained total output of more than 37.5 billion kg for two consecutive years.

Jilin has pursued quality agrarian development and by the end of 2020 a total of 35.3 million mu of high-standard farmland had been established, accounting for one third of the province's arable land.

By implementing water-saving projects, the province has strengthened its irrigation system and added drought-resistant irrigation facilities to farmlands.

The drought-resistant sowing capacity of the whole province has now reached 25 million mu.

In addition, the province has continued to take advantage of new ecological technologies for increasing production and efficiency. It has also promoted the use of dry farming and water-saving technology, which was being applied to 600,000 mu in the drought-prone areas of its western region by 2020.

Between 2018 to 2020 -- aiming at minimizing the impact of the continuous severe spring drought -- an area of nearly 60 million mu of drought-resistant sowing and irrigation was established.

In order to improve pest control, 49 modern pest monitoring and regional forecasting stations and one internet of things intelligent pest monitoring station have been built.

In view of the impact of the three typhoons in 2020, 16,000 agricultural cadres and technical experts were sent to help ameliorate the loss from the natural disasters.
