Language think tank set up in Beijing

By Sun Ye | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2012-12-13 15:14

China now has a think tank to tackle its language problems.

The Research Center for National Language Standards of the Beijing Language and Culture University was established on Wednesday. It’s the second research base under the National Language Committee.

Li Yuming, director of the research center, said it will focus on gathering data on China's languages and setting standards of usage.

The think tank will try to contribute to the county's linguistic clout by offering strategic advice on usage and development. It will also train professionals in relevant fields.

The center will soon launch a survey on China's language usage, focusing on Mandarin, as well as China's ethnic languages and dialects.
