Three sports. One event. Supercharged athleticism...And unshakeable determination.
Hi, I'm Dr Greg Wells. Imagine this: swimming for 1? kilometres in open water, or hammering through dozens of short sprints for 40k on a bike. How about running all out for 10 kilometres? Now imagine doing all three in a row. That's what makes the triathlon such a uniquely brutal event.
During the swim, arms do most of the work, so blood flows to the upper body. But when they run from the water to start biking, blood flows down into their legs.
The key to a triathlete's success is their incredible ability to control blood flow and chemical energy supplies. Our bodies use sugars like glucose to fuel muscles. They use up all the energies stored in their muscles and blood. They even steal fuel from their liver. They're looting the body for food. But the brain's part of the body and it needs energy too. And if the brain senses glucose levels are low, it forces the body to slow down. Triathletes push themselves so hard, so many times, that the brain realises they can handle it. This lets them go beyond their natural limits.
Fight the transitions...And steal from your secret energy reserves. That's the path to the podium!
