Sheffield's China roots run deep

China Daily | Updated: 2013-03-09 08:10

The pioneering staff at Sheffield Hallam University in the United Kingdom has worked for many years to develop links and partnerships with prestigious universities and businesses in China.

It has been almost 10 years since the university first established a satellite office in Beijing, paving the way for the construction of an ever-growing network of leading Chinese institutions.

"We are extremely proud to celebrate almost a decade of our successful engagement in China, supported by our Beijing office," said James Richardson, director of International Development at Sheffield Hallam.

"We hope to build on this milestone to establish even more positive collaborations between ourselves and China, in education and research as well as in industry."

Among the university's wide-ranging collaborations was a design project with the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.

Designing Impact, a book produced by the joint venture, was praised as the "Most Beautiful Book in China" by the nation's General Administration of Press and Publications.

The university also enjoys strong educational partnerships with the reputable Sino British College in Shanghai and the graduate school of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen.

An exchange visit to both is taking place later this month.

As a result of Sheffield Hallam's firmly established reputation in China, students from the university were also selected to be the only Europeans working at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

The university is also a founding member of global educational partnership the Northern Consortium.

It received the Best China Education Links award in 2010 and 2011, which recognized the school as a top choice for Chinese undergraduates and postgraduates looking to study in the UK.
