Men are more often victims of mobile payment scams on the internet. More than 70 percent of victims of online fraud are men, according to a report released by Tencent, which is based on the big data of its mobile payment platform users in the first quarter of 2016.

The report also shows the most common fraud is fake messages claiming to be from police and legal departments, 38 percent of the total, followed by fake massages from acquaintances and false notices of customer service from online shopping.

In each million people aged of 51 to 60, there were 153 victims, while only 23 people aged under 23 are fooled by online fraud in the same sample size. In addition, the percentage of victims residing in Sichuan, Shandong and Hebei are the highest – over seven percent.

Xu Guo'ai, vice-general manager of its payment platform and financial applications, said Tencent promises to compensate for all losses suffered by their clients who were tricked by online payment fraud, "if not caused by their own negligence", and the company has paid tens of millions of compensation so far.
