Major Chinese ports see container volume recovery

Container volume through two major Chinese ports has seen a strong recovery in September, with analysts attributing this to the government's stimulus policy.

However, it remains unclear whether the recovery will continue in the following months, the analysts said.

According to the latest data released by the Shanghai International Port, container throughput through the port, the world’s busiest, climbed 11.6 percent year-on-year in September to 2.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units. This is a 5.6 percent volume increase compared with August, according to the data. During the month, the port handled cargo totaling 44.4 million metric tons, up 10 percent compared with the same period last year and up 12 percent from a month earlier.

Ningbo port, another major container port in China, handled 1.6 million boxes in September, up 20 percent from a year earlier, the port said. The port also handled a total of 40.8 million tons of cargo, up 23.5 percent from a year earlier.

Analysts believe that other Chinese ports will also see recoveries in their cargo flow and container throughput.
