Located in Southwest Taiyuan, the Jinci Tianlong Mountain Scenic Area covers an area of 3.86 square kilometers and has been a renowned tourist destination since the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534). The area is centered around the Jinci Temple Museum, Jinci Park, and Tianlong Mountain and includes over 40 scenic spots.
Jinci Temple is situated at the foot of Xuanweng Mountain. It was originally built to honor Ji Yu, the prince of the State of Jin, during the early Western Zhou Dynasty (c. 11th century–771 BC). As the oldest surviving royal sacrificial garden in China, Jinci Temple is also the only architectural complex that integrates the essence of ancient buildings from the Song (420–479), Jin (1115–1234), Yuan (1271–1368), Ming (1368–1644), and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties, earning its title as the "Museum of Ancient Chinese Architecture".
Jinci Temple is rich in cultural heritage, with 98 structures such as halls, pavilions, bridges, and towers. It also houses 114 painted sculptures, 19 iron artifacts, 444 stone tablets, 219 poetic inscriptions, and 122 ancient trees, including 29 over a thousand years old. Among its highlights are the Nanlao Spring, the Maidservant Sculptures from the Song Dynasty, and the Zhou Bai (a cypress tree planted in the Zhou Dynasty), collectively known as the "Jinci Three Wonders".
Tianlong Mountain, located at an elevation of 1,700 meters, 36 km Southwest of Taiyuan in the Luliang Mountains, is a historic cultural mountain that combines forest, springs, temples, and caves. The site contains over 100 historical relics, including grottoes, ancient buildings, tomb towers, inscriptions, sculptures, and murals.
The Tianlong Mountain grottoes consist of 25 caves, which represent the peak of cave art from the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-581) to the Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) dynasties. Stone-carved arhats reflect the cultural fusion of the Tang Dynasty with influences from the northern capital and the widespread growth of Buddhism during that time. Tianlong Mountain is also known for its lush vegetation, with over 200 plant species and an 85-percent forest coverage rate.
For centuries, the Jinci Tianlong Mountain Scenic Area has attracted countless visitors drawn to its unique landscapes and rich cultural history. Renowned poets such as Li Bai (701-762), Bai Juyi (772-846), and Ouyang Xiu (1007-1072) left 480 poems and songs celebrating the beauty of the area, preserving its legacy through the ages.
