Nantong in Jiangsu province recently released an implementation plan to improve local air quality.

The plan states that the overall goals and improvement objectives for air pollution prevention and control efforts are centered around enhancing air quality, with a primary focus on reducing the concentration of PM2.5.

By 2025, the average concentration of PM2.5 in Nantong should be 27 micrograms per cubic meter, while emissions of oxynitride and volatile organic compounds should be reduced by over 10 percent from 2020, according to the plan.

To achieve these goals, Nantong will work to optimize and adjust the industry, energy, and transportation sectors and strengthen pollution prevention and control measures for industrial, mobile, and residential sources.

The city will also focus on enhancing atmospheric environmental monitoring, regulatory enforcement, and policy standards and take a comprehensive, multi-faceted, and in-depth approach to advancing air pollution prevention and control efforts.

Guo Wei, director of the atmospheric environment department of the Nantong municipal bureau of ecology and environment, explained that pollution from mobile sources like vehicles has become a significant contributor to the city's air pollution.

The implementation plan places the greatest emphasis on low-carbon and green transformation in the transportation sector, Guo added.

The municipal bureau also encourages broad participation from all sectors of society to adopt green and low-carbon transportation methods, working towards the continuous improvement of air quality in the city.
