China asks US to learn from report on Native Americans
China urged on Friday the United States to learn from history and reflect upon itself to address its human rights issues and refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of other countries under the pretext of human rights.
The second volume of the Federal Indian Boarding School Truth Initiative investigative report, released by the US Department of the Interior on Tuesday, said at least 973 Indigenous children died while attending boarding schools run or supported by the US government. Children were often punished for speaking their own languages and forcibly converted to faith and many were subjected to physical abuse.
"China has taken note of the relevant report. The founding history of the US is a history of tears and bloodshed for Native Americans," Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a daily news briefing on Friday.
The issue of indigenous people is the original sin of the US with the Indian boarding schools the biggest evidence of this sin, Lin said.
Historically, the US carried out systematic cultural genocide, spiritual genocide, and ethnic genocide against native Indians, Lin said, adding that today, they remain an invisible group and a disappearing race.
It is regrettable that the US has not only avoided and attempted to conceal this dark history for a long time, but also, under the guise of human rights, spread false information about forced labor and forced assimilation in other countries, he said.
Lin also pointed out that Washington has showed indifference to the unprecedented humanitarian crises in Gaza, adding that the US military have abused the extraterritorial jurisdiction and committed heinous crimes such as indiscriminate killing and prisoner torture in other countries.
While emphasizing that the historic injustices against Native Americans must be faced squarely, Lin called on the US to correct its human rights abuses around the world.
