Peking Opera honors Gong Quanzhen's inspirational life
The remarkable tale of Gong Quanzhen (1923-2023), a steadfast member of the Communist Party of China for over seven decades, has been immortalized in a contemporary Peking Opera production by the prestigious China National Peking Opera Company. The opera, bearing Gong's name, made its grand debut in Beijing on June 14 and 15, paying tribute to her unwavering commitment to rural education and humanitarian causes.
Gong, who joined the Party in 1952 and was the wife of the esteemed late general Gan Zuchang, dedicated her life to uplifting communities and nurturing the youth, even in her retirement years. Her selfless efforts touched countless lives, embodying the spirit of service and compassion.
Tragically, in 2023, Gong passed away at the age of 100 in Lianhua county, Jiangxi province, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and dedication that continues to inspire.
The elaborate Peking Opera production, crafted over two years by a team led by director Yang Xiaoqing and scriptwriter Chen Yongquan, delves into Gong's extraordinary life story. Renowned Peking Opera artists, including Wang Runjing portraying Gong and Tian Lei embodying the role of General Gan, immersed themselves in Jiangxi province to absorb the essence of Gong's narrative, ensuring an authentic and heartfelt portrayal on stage.
