To improve his life, Zhang started to learn plastering cement by himself. After some time, he left his job and began working as an independent construction worker.
More than three decades later, he earns 300 to 400 yuan ($44 to $58.7) a day in good times and at least 200 yuan on bad days, a 200-fold increase of his starting salary.
